Yogo sapphires were discovered by Charlie Russell's trapper friend and mentor Jake Hoover. While many sapphires from around the world are heated to make them turn blue, the distinctive Yogo sapphires are treasured for their natural cornflower blue color. Mining of these precious stones continues today in a shaft near Utica.
