I accept that violent extremists can come from anywhere but there does seem to be a particular problem with violent extremists professing Islam as their guidance. Looking for terrorists is like looking for needles in haystacks and with limited resources attention is bound to be paid to Muslim communities.

Please no answers about nuking millions or death squads quietly taking the terrorists out and somehow suppressing press coverage.

It may be true that Muslim leaders have not been pro-active enough in publicly condemning terrorism but this is largely outwith our control.

Is the only answer to accept that we are in for a long struggle and will need to accept some pain in the form of successful terrorist attacks in the process if we are to fight this battle in an appropriate manner? Any thoughts?

Keep an open mind at all times. To allow info of hatred that every muslim is an evil killer is not going to solve the issue. It's a quick way but you can easily convict 100 men to their death or you can save something innocent with hard facts and an open mind. WHat would you want to do? Kill every muslim who lives and start ww3 really soon or be tolerant and diplomatic towards solving the issue. When i mean diplomatic, I don't mean kill or nuke every muslim because you would not be solving the issue at hand. You would need to find a way to dismantle the extremists such as making the muslim community speak out against the extremists. That's a peaceful solution than killing innocent lives.

I believe that humanity has a chance to solve this problem without guns and hatred.

the first step is to reduce hatred and make the general public informed of all the information available. Not just what the media wants you to see. THere is always another side to the story.

Target the extremist terrorists, not entire nations of Muslims. Remember Bin Laden and his Al Qaeda band in Afghanistan were responsible for 9-11? They should have been killed or captured. Get out of Iraq, it's a known terrorist breeding ground and recruitment tool. See the report on the National Intelligence Estimate below. Negotiate with the Palestinians and Israelis for a Palestinian state. Take a reasoned, balanced approach to the Lebanon-Israel conflict.

You're absolutely right, it's impractical and impossible to fight some ill-defined, ubiquious enemy. There's really are some definite enemies and some good solutions are possible.

By emphasising that Islam is a religion of peace as all great religions are, and that those who kill civilians (some of whom will be Muslims) are therefore not good Muslims and therefore not Islamic at all.
At the start of the troubles in Northern Ireland the press portrayed the 2 sides as "Catholic" versus "Protestant" whereas Church leaders on both sides routinely condemned the violence.

It was then more accurately portrayed as Loyalist versus Nationalist or Republican.
If we condemn the US led invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan, which has cost more lives than it has saved, we have more chance of gaining the sympathy and trust of the peaceful Muslim majority, who will then become more willing to condemn and weed out the extremists amongst them.

I do agree with Avery. Do not punish all or majoriy of Muslims AND also non-muslim citizens (taking away cilivil rights) in your countries for the deeds of fanatical few. The worst thing is that the Western leaders through their silly actions and breaking of the human rights have been giving extremists ideological weapon which the latter can use to convert to their believes also moderate members of the Muslim community.

You can't. Every attack on anything Islam is seen as an attack on evrything Islam.

I wouldn't even bother trying, don't let them pass their problems on to you. They are responsible for the way they react, not us.
