I think this is just a combination of terms referring to the fact that network topology can be viewed as a graph theory problem. Topology is actually a branch of geometry and graph theory that involves the shapes and angle relationships of various figures. Network topogoly refers to the "shape" of the network such as bus, star, ring or mesh. Other terms from graph theory are also used in network topology like node, edge, path, loop and mesh. Wikipedia has a good article for "network topology".
