Quite literally, great art is extremely difficult to create.. to produce. a great deal of time, effort, emotion, sweat and frustration go into it's creation. To create it simply to create it, to some, would seem a wasted effort.. but creating it for mankind.. for all posterity is another matter.. to know that all of that time, effort, emotion, sweat and frustration will enrich, enhance and perhaps, change someone's life is motivation enough for many.

"Great art" is a pretty subjective term.... I think art is usually produced as a means of communicating... something.

Picaso's stuff, confusing as it may appear, is very effective in communicating struggle, confusion, etc.... maybe that's what he was trying to convey.

VanGough's Stary Night, because of his techique, seems more stary- the texture, etc.

Some art that we describe as great was commissioned work- the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, for example. As magnificent as it is, Michelangelo didn't paint it just so he could have something to paint. He was paid to do it.
