A common perception of leadership is that people expect a leader to be personally successful. You can't lead a group out of poverty unless you made it.

A prophet is not without honour, but in his own country, and among his own kin, and in his own house. If some one rises from among his peers, he will have more enemies.

So how do they respect? Well wishers and diliatants.
