The main reason is that is it bad to raise the body's core temperature, as it is harmful to the baby. The reason being that when the body's temperature is raised, blood flows differently around the body - more to the extremities/skin surface in an attempt to lower the body's temperature (which is why you looked redder and 'flushed' when you are hot) (as opposed to when the body is cold, and less blood flows to the extremities to minimise heat loss - which can result in frostbite etc). Thus, the theory is that blood flow will then be less to the baby, so the baby will get less oxygen, nutrients etc, which obviously is not good for the baby's development.
There is no scientific evidence of this, but based on the theory above, it is medical advice for pregnant woman to avoid hot tubs/jacuzzis/saunas.

I asked my doctor about this the other week. There is not proof that anything will happen , but if you put a fish bowl ( with a fish ) on top of a TV ( where it will get warm , and possibly hot ) that , that can just not be good for the fish. Same thing goes for the baby. Its a better be safe then sorry thing. I love taking hot showers and sitting in the tub with really hot water. I miss those things. Its worth it though.

It raises your core body temperature which can be harmful to the baby. However, you can take hot baths and showers because no matter how hot the water is, it's constantly cooling off, so it doesn't raise your body temperature like a hot tub or jacuzzi.

I heard that over heating can cause a baby to be born w/out a brain...Anencephaly. Yes, a baby can be born w/out a brain, however they will only live a few hours. There is a neural tube but no brain. This occurs in 3 out of every 10,000 births. I'm sure there are other reasons, but that the most sever one I've heard of. Wish it was ok because I could really use a soak in a hot tub right now!!!

It's because the temperature of the hot tub or jacuzzi can drop your blood pressure if your body temperature gets too high.

The hot temperature of the water will warm the amniotic fluid too hot for the baby & the baby will have little marks when it is born which were blisters from the amnotic fluid getting too hot and burning the baby's skin. The same reason why pregnant women should avoid tanning beds.

You need to watch the temperature. I've heard that it's best if it doesn't go over 100 degrees, because it could raise your body temperature and be harmful for the baby.
