It means to get what you really want to get, and if it is worth something to get it, you might have to let go of what you already have to make room for what you want to obtain.
Or in other words, when you give, you will receive, and when you receive, you must give. In the end, you are finally receiving the benefits of your actions.

Because, the importance of what you gain is worth so much more than the material things in life. Nothing is free. There is a price for every disicion.
What would it profit you if you could gain the whole world, but lose your soul in the process? For example, when a person accepts Jesus as their savior, you forsake the former things (sin. desire for money, power) to live a life as one who has everlasting life. To have everlasting life (in Heaven) the price you pay is turning away from your old sinful life and living a life with your Savior.
Hope this helped!

I think an example is best to explain:
A child is very sick and needs a very expensive medical procedure. The parents are not rich. In fact, they barely get by as it is. They can either say, "Oh well. There's nothing to do." and the child dies, or they sell all they own, including their home, and put themselves in the street but at least their child might live.
The child lived at the expense of their parents losing all of their material possessions.

Sometimes you have to lose everything first to gain anything out of it. Like some people fall upon hard times and have nothing. They get back on their feet again and make something out of their lives and good things start coming. How can you learn something i you don't mess up? You appreciate things more when you have nothing to begin with.

If you want it bad enough, you gotta pay the price! Just make sure the price is worth it.

It means you have to get your priorities right and to do that you may have to give up some things on the way........
(eg..You really love that little red sports car but my house roof leaks and I only have enough money for one or the other)...Roof, SHOULD win out !!...got it..

think it means, to gain something so great and precious, you might have to lose the other things you have. like to become holy, so might lose your Jaguar.

I guess a good example would be, a willingness to die for your beliefs.
