I'm not sure how to put this, because I don't want to offend anyone.

Do black people want to be called African American or just American?

American...but for descriptive purposes...black is fine... To say African-American would be to imply that I once lived in Africa, but became a citizen of the USA later, which I didnt.. I am American, my parents are American, their parents were American, and so on..I believe that we were descended from Africa, but I havent traced that far yet...ty for asking, good question

In general most of us prefer either Black or African-American and a smaller contingent prefer American....

It doesn't matter to me. Personally, I use the term "black" and "African American" interchangeably. I'm not offended, sweetie, and that's a good question. Thanks for asking it.

By the way, I love that "late for dinner" thing. That's the truth, honey!

I'm black, and either one is fine with me. I was raised to not judge someone by their race, but to get to know the real person. Over the years, developing that belief has worked very well for me. I would hate to be full of feelings of racism - which I see here from time to time. Especially since racism is just another word for hatred.

Good question! No offense taken.
