I wouldn't recommend the Colon side, stay on the Panama City side and go to the Mayflores locks which is only a few minutes from Panama City. Also you could go down to the old ruins in Panama city and see them, that is pretty cool area to see and it doesn't cost much to go in the area and walk around. Also there is a nice mall in Albrook, which has about everything in it. Then would recommend going to the causeway and watch the ships entering qand leaving the canal.
I recommend staying on the Panama City side because it is much safer then the Colon side.

Panama Canal and through Gatun Lake. We navigate our way up the waterway passing jungle islands and vessels making thier way to Gatun Locks. After 3 hours of being in the canal you willbe taken back to Gamboa and enjoy a lunch on the bank of the chagres river with a view of ships passing by.
