I want to save space by placing my desktop Compaq sideways on a shelf. The shelf is not tall enough to place the cpu in a normal upright position. Will I harm my computer operating it this way?

Yes, your computer is designed to be upright if it's a tower computer. (note, some computers are designed to lay flat like you're talking about). If you lay it on it's side, it's cooling system won't work correctly, and can overheat much more easily. Any moving parts can be damaged by this as well (such as the spinning hard drive, cd drive, dvd drive, etc.) although this isn't the biggest threat. Mostly you'd have to worry about keeping it cool.

Yes.

It will affect the CD/DVD drive when in operation, and the hard drives. That is, parts with spinning discs in which the read-write head is very near but not touching the discs

In addition, the air flow when positioned on its side will be different when standing, as designed; it will affect cooling.

i think of you propose a private laptop/tower as adversarial to a laptop (no longer that it makes any distinction). The CPU is the main important chip on the motherboard, no longer the whole device and particular, it could?
