A hangover (veisalgia) is the sum of unpleasant physical effects following heavy consumption of alcohol. The most common reported characteristics of a hangover are feelings of extreme thirst, lethargy, nausea, sensitivity to sunlight and noise, and headache. Hypoglycemia, dehydration, and vitamin B12 deficiency are all theorized causes of hangover symptoms. Hangover symptoms may be felt for a variable period of time after alcohol consumption, and may persist for a short period of time (12 to 36 hours[1]), or even longer (48 to 72 hours after the last alcoholic drink is consumed[2]).

Symptoms
An alcohol hangover is associated with a variety of symptoms that may include dehydration, tiredness, headache, nausea, diarrhea, weakness, hypersalivation, difficulty concentrating, anxiety, irritability, sensitivity to light and noise and trouble sleeping. The symptoms vary from person to person, and occasion to occasion, usually beginning several hours after drinking. It is not clear whether hangovers affect cognitive abilities.

Hangover Cures & Prevention
Why do hangovers occur?
Alcohol is a diuretic, which means it pushes fluids out of the body. Loss of fluid is accompanied by loss of essential salts like potassium and magnesium. Blood-sugar levels are also disrupted and toxins from the intake of alcohol can remain in the body for several hours after drinking has finished. The general loss of essential salts and dehydration leads to the hangover.
Minimizing the hangover
The type of alcohol you drink does make a difference. The darker sweeter drinks have more congeners (complex organic molecules of which methanol is one). Therefore brandy, sherry, red wine and whiskey will give you more of a hangover than white wine and vodka. Cheap spirits poorly refined are more likely to give you a hangover.

Hair of the dog.
Drinking more alcohol actually does work to an extent. This is because ethanol in alcoholic drinks blocks the breakdown of methanol to formaldehyde and formic acid. It is however a very bad way of dealing with hangovers because of the strain it puts on the liver and stomach. It also puts off the hangover to a later time which, when it does arrive, can feel even worse. The Prairie Oyster is just such a "cure", (brandy, angostura bitters, worcestershire sauce and raw egg).

The None-Alcohol Hangover Mix
1 part olive oil, 1 raw egg yolk, salt and pepper, 1-2 tablespoons of tomato ketchup, a dash of Tabasco and worcestershire sauce and some lemon juice (or vinegar).

The egg yolk contains N-acetyl-cysteine (NAC), an amino acid that helps to drive out the toxins acquired from booze and tobacco smoke. Tomato ketchup provides bioflavonoids which are an excellent source of antioxidants to help boost the immune system. If you absolutely can't cope without a hair of the dog, mix this with a splash of Vodka. Vodka contains fewer additives than other alcoholic drinks.

Other Hangover Recommendations

Drink lots of water, at least twice the amount of water to alcohol.

Take some vitamin C.

If you can stomach it, bananas help to replenish many essential salts.

Take some sugar; alcohol lowers your blood sugar levels.

Take some pain relief tablets. Avoid aspirin as the alcohol has probably already made your stomach lining rather sensitive.

Sleep. A few hours of it can work miracles. Don't drive until you have fully recovered. Just because you've slept after a drinking session doesn't mean you're sober. Nothing can speed alcohol out of the body so don't kid yourself that a strong coffee will do it (it's more likely just to help replenish a little fluid).
Hangover Cures: Tips from Readers

1. Try a ripe avocado. (Roly)
2. Lots of water and an ibuprofen. Drink water while drinking alcohol (AnneHost - on the forum)
3. Flax seed oil in the evening after drinking. Helps tremendously (Bunsen - on the forum).
4. You should also strongly advise against acetaminophen. A few years ago, a man successfully sued the makers of Tylenol because he had habitually used it after drinking as a hangover remedy/preventive. His liver failed and he had to have a transplant (Don G)

1) drink a lot of water!!
2) eat something with grease, like fried eggs. That really works.
3) (but you can only get that if you are living in Europe I guess..) eat salted (raw) herrings! That works the best!
Maybe you can try some other fat fish instead, like smoked mackerel or salmon or someting like that. Really, If I have a hangover a few herrings make me feel so much better...

Have had plenty and have tried lots of remedies... best is lots of water ( or sports drinks) even if your stomach is not tolerant,, keep drinking. Also try to have a good meal.. maybe even something fried to help soak up the toxins from drinking.. take two tylenol.. and bare with it.. fresh air and sunshine can be a help too even if it's only phsycological... good luck.. i don't envy you..

Learn how much is enough for your system and stop at that point. Alcohol is a poison - very hard on your liver and destroying nutrients in your body that you need for a healthy life.

Whatever makes you happy and relaxed for a while is enough and your body punishes you when you have "overindulged".
