I think I am one of those who denounce Christianity yet make the accurate claim that Christ was a leftist.
The reason for this is that some ethics are eternal. You don't have to be a Christian to believe murder, for example, is immoral. Some of the Christian ethics are good, some are antiquated. All of Old and New Testament ontology and epistemology, however, is antiquated. Science has replaced those spheres of ancient philosophy.
How can we say Jesus was a communist? It's right there in the Bible, if you believe those stories are accurate depictions of history. Jesus turned over the tables of the money changers, which was an act as revolutionary as attacking the Bank of America today. Jesus said the poor are the children of God. He said, "For he who is least among you all—he is the greatest. (Luke 9:48). Jesus said it was easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than it is for a rich man to make it into heaven.
Here's a great example. This was written almost 2000 years before Karl Marx...
Acts, Chap 4:32-35; {All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but they shared everything they had. With great power the apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and much grace was upon them all. There were no needy persons among them. For from time to time those who owned lands or houses sold them, brought the money from the sales and put it at the apostles' feet, and it was distributed to anyone as he had need.}
That's small 'c' communism, plain and simple.
Karl Marx, thosands of years later, would become famous for saying, "From each according to his ability to each according to his needs."
Your question would be more relevant and accurate if you were ask how Christians can believe in the Bible but not believe in its economic ethics?
The ancient communist solution for a zero-sum economy that has become characterized by maldistributed wealth is a timeless solution that is relevant today. Perhaps that's why Warren Buffet gave away $31 billion of his wealth, saying that the wealth society created for him should be returned for its needs?

If you can't find the answer to such an easy question then it's not worth telling you. Can you think of any way in which Jesus was right wing? Did he ever set up his own business (carpentry perhaps) and try to make a few bucks of his fellow man? No, he went around preaching equality and the brotherhood of man, he gave bread to the starving and healed the sick.
If he had been right wing he would have been selling his healing abilities to the highest bidder and there would be no Christianity today, so actually it's a shame he wasn't just another selfish git like you.

The part about feeding the hungry? Healing the sick? Turning the other cheek? Let he who cast the first stone... ? Forgive your brother 7 times 77 times? As hard for a rich man to get into the kingdom of heaven as through the eye of a needle?
You think he would approve ridiculously-long and harsh prison sentences? Corporate welfare? Wars of aggression under false pretexts? Tax cuts for the richest in society?
He would, however, approve of universal health care, benefits for veterans and social security.
So was he a leftist? You decide.
Besides, we're not against Christianity. Just Bible-thumping idiots who use his name to justify whatever hateful belief they espouse. And who seem to think Jesus was a Republican, an American and/or a conservative.

I denounce Christianity but I believe there very likely was a person named Jesus. I can't get into the whole raising from the dead thing. Too Hollywood for me. I believe Jesus was a pacifist. If that means he was leftist, then well I guess he was.

Liberals do not denounce Christianity. There are a number of liberal Christians. They denounce the hypocrisy of Conservatives' Christianity.
