Easy enough... go to the website for the Indian embassy in Washington, D.C. and look uder VISA's. Seek a residency VISA and the requirements to attain one. In general if you want to move there for any real length of time you will need a residency visa. There are some universal requirements for such a VISA, however each country has exceptions and loophole that can be exploited in order to attain this VISA status.

The universal requirements are as follows:

~ marriage to a citizen of India

~ having your child born in India and electing Indian citizenship for the child... this makes you the immediate family and guardian of an Indian citizen

~ substantial monetary investment in the form of a corporation and jobs provided for the local economy... usually requires you employ a minimum of 4 or 5 employees

~ substantial monetary investment in the form of liquid assets in the Indian banking system... usually around $200,000.00 us dollars, but this varies so you will need to check

~ employment with a company located in India... you will get a work VISA and then apply for residency later

~ proven retirement income of at least $2,000.00 us dollars a month... proof will be required and the money will need to be wired automatically to an Indian bank to qualify... this ensures you will not be a drain on thier economy

I would suggest you go as a tourist and see if you like it, also look for jobs and apartments while you are there. You will get a flavor for the place and decide if this is what you really want. India is an aquired taste and not for everyone. Being an expatriot is all well and good, but be smart and err on the side of caution... you may find another country suits your needs better.

As the person above said, you need to prove that you have a valid source of income and/or emotional attachment to become a permanent resident. Living as an expatriate in India requires a lot of qualification and specialised skills because you will be able to find a job only if you have such special skills that locals cannot fulfill which is not much nowadays. However, if you manage to get such a job, you can find that you can afford many luxuries that you cannot even think of in the US like domestic help, chauffered cars, independent house, etc......However, it is not easy to live in a culture and environment that is quite different from the one you are accustomed to.

stay there for 183 days and you can claim residency. Then you might be in a better position to know if you want to become a citizen or not. (I am tired of the UK and wanted to move out to India)

Perhaps you should contact the Embassy and ask for information about dual citizenship, rather than relinquishing your citizenship in the US
However also think it seems quite strange that you want to live in a 3rd world country.
Do you sincerely believe that your life will be better in India ?
Good Luck

It will be quite hard, because of the fact that you do not have any relatives that are born Indian. 'There is still a possibility. Contact The Indian embassy. They will give you more details.
Best of Luck!

I'm sure they'd let you in (contact the embassy) but why would you want to move to a 3rd world country with no opportunity?
