Gandhi started the quit India movement in 1942 asking Britishers to leave India. Britain was busy with the second world war and its man power was fully engaged in tackling Hitler. After the war ended in 1944 britain found itself totally depleted of man power to Manage an Empire and handle a country like India where the freedom struggle had reached the peak. So Atlee decided to free India. How ever British did not want a united powerful India which may overtake Britain and other European nations in advancement
So they adopted the divide policy by instigating Mohammadali Jinnah to ask for separate state called Pakistan. This was known as the two nation theory. Jinnah threatened that if his demand was not acceded to he will cause blood bath by causing a civil war between Hindus and Muslims.
Initially Gandhi resisted but after his visit to Naokhali where riots had taken place he decided to concede to the Demand of Jinnah.
Gandhi agreed to partition India without any clear cut stipulations which should have avoided future conflicts and complications
Secondly it was a unilateral decision of Gandhi which was not approved by the majority of indians (which included many Muslim leaders also). Jinnah took full advantage of this and in the resultant partition lakhs of people from punjab were killed , their property confiscated , their woman were killed and raped and there was a sea of people who became refugees in their owncountry. The majority which did not approve of the action of Gandhi called him a traitor and some people decided to liquidate him before he could cause further damage.
In indian History written in post independent era These facts are not high lighted but the people who opposed partition are portaryed as traitors.

after reading a few books on this great and unusual man, i got the impression he was making every effort to get the muslims and hindus to quit fighting, killing and live side by side in peace asking no one to change their basic beliefs. he even wanted eliminate the caste system of the hindus. it was one of his own a hindu who assassinated him believing him to be a traitor by listening to and being friends with some muslims. this was and i believe is a good part of the problems still in the india and pakistan areas. no one is perfect. but if people practiced sharing and getting along like he did the world would be a better place

I do not subscribe to the answer, but the reasons are:

1. He did not do enough to prevent partition of India, after saying that it would only his dead body.
2. He stopped Hindus in Bengal from reprisals against Muslims without being able to stop Hindus fm being killed in East Pakistan. And he did this thru emotional blackmail by going on a fast and making Hindus responsible for his death. Without any fear of any backlash, Hindus in East Pakistan were killed in large nos.
3. He forced India to give to the new state of Pakistan their share of revenues even though Pakistan attacked Kashmir immediately after Partition. So in effect, India's revenues were used by Pakistan to fight a war against India itself. Everyone in the Cabinet protested, but as usual, Gandhi had his way.
