People believe or made to believe that Gandhi was fully responsible for getting freedom to India. It is also propagated that his non violent Resistance was the weapon which won freedom to India. This is not strictly true. It was fluke of History that Hitler started the second world war in which billions of people died and the majority were young men of many nations.
The war left Britain depleted of man power. They had not enough men to govern India. In fact the post war problems of Britain were so acute that keeping and governing a headache like India was not worth while. So they decided to hand over the government back to Indians. Had Hitler not done the damage to England
would they have let go India?
There is no point in debating this as course of History changed the events and it became favourable to India .
So it is not a guarantee that Gandhian way will work in real life situations unless there is catalytic factor to it.

There is a vast difference between the Gandhi of the movie, and the actually historical man. You might wish to do some research on the actual man to see if Gandhi's methods "worked" for him.

In fact, if you count dying a violent death, spending huge amounts of time in jail or under detention, suffering ill health, etc as "good" then you're all set. In life, you're gonna suffer... the question is, what kind of suffering do you want?

India represents a massive failure of Gandhi's ideals. India has been in a constant state of war since independence (certainly since partition). Religious intolorence is still a problem. India is a member of the nuclear bomb club. Multinational corporatations have huge facilities in India, and hire thousands of Indian workers.

Works for me. Worked for Martin Luther King, Jr. Worked for Ghandi.

When they fail, it is due to the overwhelming nature of hatred, tyranny and greed against which they are opposed.
