It is an unfortunate stereotype, I can certainly say that most people I have met from Liverpool have been warm hearted and kind.
This happens to many groups of people over time and often does relate to historical events, as described in the docks above.
You probably don';t remember but there was a nursery rhyme (I haven't heard it for ages) that used to go ..
Taffy was a Welshman , Taffy was a Thief !
A Taff is a person from Cardiff (the river Taff flows through it)
Not so different .....
Over time I expect the opinion will change for the better ..

I have often wandered the same thing. But you can blame some of it on "so called comedians", from Liverpool who think that they are funny. We are hard working and charitable city, and a friendly one at that. We are also very proud people in our appearance and our homes. I dont know any thieves or scallies do you.?

In the unions, when something is done so frequently by any employees that is against the employers rules and regulations that it comes to be accepted as the norm, it's always referred to as being "Past Practise".
Unfortunately, the same sort of thing has happened to Liverpool where, because so much has been written and said and portrayed by other means about the alleged criminal association with that City that it too, has become accepted as the norm - thus the old jokes like "I'm popping up to Liverpool to visit my hubcaps" have proliferated.

I dont think anyone actually refers to Scousers as thieves, its just a stereotype picked up from TV... remember Harry Enfield's Scousers??
They are no more thieves than Scots are drunks, Jordies are thugs, and Southerners are toffee-nosed snobs... to name a few stereotypes!

it comes from back in the days when the docks were alive and there were peoples from all over the world in the city, some of these people were not as honest as us scousers and earned us a reputation. its because people are small minded and wont forget it,

hahaha - only joking !
stereotyping from narrow minded people have a good way of spreading this kind of reputation and I'm afraid to say that almost always, it sticks. same thing where i live!
hey ho. you'll find a person have their own opinion and then people are generally sheep. it makes them feel safe in their little worlds.
try not to let it get to you - rise above it! x

Its stupid small minded people who can't think for themselves, so rely on stereotypes.
Next you will be telling me that all welsh people are good singers and worry sheep and all women are terrible drivers and enjoy breaking cars.
