i was bumped at a light and my habit of keeping my hand on the auto shifter caused it to go into reverse at approx. 15 to 20 mph..now it wont go into reverse and in park it makes a god awefull noise is there a simple solution for this

it could be the linkage has moved ,but going into reverse at 15-20 mph also could break the band inside the transmission if this is fact you will need to get the transmission repaired it wont be cheap if you have the person that hit you information make them pay for it through their insurance comp

Sounds like a synchro is shot, but it could be worse. Take it to a transmission shop, it might only cost about $85 if it's a synchro. Or it could just be a bent linkage, which could only be letting it shift to a midway point between gears. Which would be a cheaper fix.

its probably gone, but you can check the shifter arm on the transmission, i may have bent in the crash, do you know how to check that.
