Dont worry, the way the petrol and car tax (not forgetting insurance) is going at the moment, only the super-rich will be able to afford a car in 10 years.

Seeing our government forces both good safety and dumb safety rules and regs on society - I would imagine at some point in time they will deem it necessary to force people to Car-Pool and there will be more public transit services (cable-cars, buses, etc) to save on congested highways.
This would cut down on hundreds and thousands of deaths in car accidents not to mention reducing green-house emissions that contribute to global warming.
But thats just a best guess.
