As a doorstop! You CANT use it if it isnt formatted and partitioned!

You need to partition, even if the whole hard drive is one partition.

But if the hard drive is large (say above 40 GB), it is much better to have two partitions: a primary partition (C:\), which is the active partition from which the computer boots, and an extended partition with can be divided into two or more logical drives or you may choose to keep the extended partition as one logical drive. This way, file management, fragmentation, etc are much simpler. Access time is also faster.

It is much better to do this when the hard drive is first installed. If you attempt to do this later, you will either have to get a third-party utility or loose all data and programs on the hard drive.

I am guessing that you are wondering if you have to partition the drive into multiple drive letters in order to use it. No - you don't have to partition it to multiple sections. You can format it as one large partition and use all of the space on the drive instead of having multiple partitions on the drive. Technically speaking, it will have one single "partition" being used by the entire drive.

Partitioning represents the size of the hard drive. So yes it will have to be partitioned, either as one single large drive or two or more smaller drives.

No, atlease a single partition is required... otherwise it doesn't work.
