The egg came first. Whatever genetic mutations came about to create the first chicken were present when that chicken was still in the form of an egg (it's genetic makeup does not change after it hatches).

Parkman, you may choose to believe whatever you like, but birds do not have "sexual intercourse." They have one opening called a cloaca that excretes waste and also serves as the opening for the sexual organs. When they mate, males and females press their cloacas together and sperm is passed from the male to the female. There is no penetration.

the Egg, because as birds evolved and changed forms "subtle changes from generation to generation" the changes don't become evident until the egg hatches and the new form emerges. the chicken that we know today was probably very different 100,000 years ago.

Shelled eggs developed in reptiles long before birds appeared on the earth. Of course, shell-less eggs developed even earlier, in fish and amphibians.

Both developped at the same time. When life in water became more sophisticated (forms a few millions of cells) they suddenly stopped dividing themselves and instead only giving their dns to a single cell ... that's how it started with eggs long before there was any life on the landmass of earth.
