With our first pregnancy we called a lot of people but it was Christmas eve so on Christmas day we gave our parents the pregnancy test as a gift. They were shocked. Well, we miscarried and we're pregnant again and the whole thing is so much harder this time. We've know two weeks and oddly enough the only people we've told were at work, in case of another miscarriage and we need to leave work. We don't know what to do with our families. Plus they've been so self involved with all their day to day trivial problems in life the last few weeks that we haven't felt the right moment (you don't really feel like telling someone when they're in a bad mood). Plus there is someone in the family getting married in a few weeks, and the bride is very self centered and we're worried if we tell before the wedding she'll get peeved and feel like we're stealing her thunder.
Wow, I just re-read this and realized I probably didn't help you at all, but I guess I needed to vent a little. Sorry. Maybe get your 1st child a shirt that says something about future brother/sister on the way.

Its a great idea to get/make (with fabric pens) a T-shirt that says, "I'm gonna be a big brother/sister". If you're clever you could even get a picture of your first scan on there!
I always waited until I was 12 weeks to tell, past the worst miscarriage risk, and until then it was nice to keep the secret to ourselves (though my best friend figured it out when I didn't drink!).
With my first baby, we told my husband's family at 12 weeks, we took them all out for dinner to a favourite restaurant, and announced it then - they were all thrilled. But I knew my Mum didn't want to be a grandma (even though she was 56), so I waited until I was 16 weeks and only told her then because we were going to a family party and I couldn't hide my little bump in a dress! We gave them the scan photo in an envelope as I was too scared to tell her myself (I was 24 and married!). She was okay about it but not exactly thrilled. With our second and third babies, we were living overseas so told them over the phone. With my husband's family, we waited until they were all together, then asked my husband's grandma (who was very old) to repeat to everyone what we were about to say. We said, and she repeated, "I'm going to be a great grandma again". She got it after she said it and we could hear the delighted reactions over the phone!
I guess how you tell them depends on how you think they're going to react. If you know they'll be thrilled, you can do something more inventive and fun. If they might not be so thrilled, maybe tell them more quietly.
Congratulations and wishing you a happy and healthy nine months!

We gave Christmas ornaments with Baby Smith '95 on it to several of our relatives. Then with our last child I sent my mom and dad balloons with a stuffed stork and a card that read how bout grandma and grandpa one more time. Since there had been almost 11 years between grandchildren they thought it was a mistake, but were thrilled to find out different.

With our first we told all of our immediate family right away. The ones that didnt find out right away we sent cards to saying our names and baby. With the second we put a shirt on our first born that said Big Brother and let him wear it to Thanksgiving. It took a lot of people a little bit to catch on, but when they did they were SO excited! With the 3rd we put shirts on the two older kids and we gave people cards. I need to come up with something even better for the next one I guess...lol.

We had the blessing to adopt a child. As you may know, there are many complication that can occur in an adoption and even after one has the child the birth parents can prevail. We had all the legal affairs in order. After the child's birth, we called my parents and told them of our great happiness. The legal adoption was not completed until my son was 6 months old.

When we got married then, they all were waiting and asking like every week, so when I did say yes,the news scattered like wild fire. There was nothing fancy about the story, but it sure was exciting.
