Yes, it is the diaphragm having a spasm. The diaphragm is what controls us taking in air and letting it go. It has it's own rhythm, and when that gets off, it causes hiccups to try and get it back on track.

An old bartenders trick that I used and works every time, is taking a bite of lime with Worcestershire sauce on it. It sounds gross, but the fact that it requires your concentration to do it is the trick that puts everything back to normal.

All remedies that people give you are designed to do just that, divert your concentration. So the deal is finding the trick that actually makes you do it. Think about something else and not have your mind thinking about your hiccups. Whether it is having someone scare you, drink a glass of water with some weird rules to adhere to, hold your breath for an inordinate amount of time....whatever. They are designed to put your mind on something else.

Looks like you've already received answers to the "why"........My Grama always gave us a teaspoon of sugar. It never fails! The sugar provokes some sort of chemical reaction with stomach acid that gets stirred up during a bout of hiccups......the reaction (and relief) is almost instantaneous!

it is the spasmatic contraction of the diaphragm.

Simply holding your breath works for some. Blowing out air in a steady slow stream is a another technique, this relaxes the diaphragm.

Drink a large glass of water very slowly. Take well over a minute to drink about a half liter.

forget the holding breath thinggy, that dont work unless you want to suffocate yourself. drink a cup of water really fast without stopping then make sure you burp a couple of times. do it again if you didnt burp. that will make it go away. cheers.
