New tanks need time to develop beneficial bacteria which digests the fish wastes (ammonia) and turns them into nitrites. Then other bacteria grow that will digest the nitrate and turn them into less harmful nitrates. Then you change small amounts of the water every week to make sure that the levels of nitrates don't build up too much.
For the time being there isn't much you can do but change 25% of the water every week. Your tank should start to mature in the next two weeks, but don't add more then one fish a week so that the bacteria has time to grow enough to deal with the increased bio-load.

There are a number of different conditions that could be causing this. First - did you see what the parameters of the water the fish were in when you first got them? The Ammonia/Nitrite/pH is extremely critical when moving fish from one tank to another, and even a jumpe from being in more acidic water (say a 6.5 to 6 in pH) and going to something more neutral (like a 7 to 7.4) could cause pH shock and fishy deaths.

I would like to suggest some better forums for you to learn from, and enjoy this great hobby. Here are 2 awesome sites (whose forums are full of extremely knowledgeable hobbyists). I have only been in the hobby since May myselt, and have learned more than 2 years worth of experience on my own because of these forums of people.

well it could be a number of things. you could have too many fish for your tank size or the water isn't at the right temp or many other things. You may have even bought a fish that was sick and its causing the rest of them to be sick. that happened to me once and I brought them back and got a refund. There's a website you can go to and ask questions about what you think is wrong. it's called www.tetra-fish.com. or you can call 1-800-423-6458 for live consumer support center. I hope this helps.

There might be too much or too little of something in the tank. Is it saltwater or freshwater? Saltwater tanks need a little time to 'mellow' before adding the fish.

did you put them in untreated tap water? That will kill them. Also, too cool are warm a tank will kill them. Are you feeding them too much. That works too. Best to go to Petco and talk with them about fish care.
