Firstly do not feed rabbits lettuce! It gives them diarrhea. If you saw the rabbit in a pet shop, most likely that it doesn't get any exercise. Also a rabbit can get fat from eating pellets (rabbit food) if you feed more than their daily recommended intake. I keep my rabbits in the garden and don't feed them excessive amounts they are a healthy weight.

Hey, just because you can't get much in the way of nutrition out of lettuce (which is OK, because what you want it for is fiber, not nutrition), doesn't mean a rabbit can't. Their digestion is very different, and they can process that lettuce as efficiently as a cow processes grass, and for much the same reason: their digestion holds onto the food much longer, through a series of chambers, and extracts much more from it than we do. We need fiber to scour out our insides and keep them moving nicely. They hang onto it until it's a hard little pellet. They got a whole lot more out of it than we did, but we don't work that way.

THEY EAT MORE THAN LETTUCE, IF THEY ONLY ATE LETTUCE THEY WOULD DIE!!! THEY NEED PROTEIN, AND OTHER NUTRIENTS!!! I RAISE RABBITS AND BUY MY FEED FROM A QUALITY FEED STORE!!! EATING ONLY LETTUCE IS A MYTH!!! USUALLY RABBITS GET FAT BECAUSE THEY ARE CAGED AND DON'T GET TO RUN LIKE WILD RABBITS. CAGED RABBITS DON'T GET ENOUGH EXERCISE!!

Are you sure that it is not getting something else? I can see no where where it states that lettuce has ANY fattening contents for any person/animal
