Sounds like your mother may have depression, and copes with it by lashing out at others as a way of dealing with her pain.
However, while pity is what you might have for her, it DOES NOT give her the right to be verbally abusive to you or others. Regardless of what she maybe going through, you have a right to be treated with respect. Express your concerns to her about why she is so unhappy and spiteful. Suggest a physician that she could see. If she denies it, then you need to gain support from your friends and other family members. If you are at a point where you can live on your own and support yourself, then set up a residence for yourself, and limit your visits/contact with her. You are under no obligation to put up with her behavior, and should not feel gulity.

unfortunately we can pick our friends but we cant pick our family , the old classic saying ,and is still true . It is very hard to come to terms and accept that yours and my mum is a ***** . i tried for years to tell her what i feel .To tried to reconcile myself with her after years of getting my self away from her.Trouble is i think she is just thick and selfish and wont change no matter what i say . in the end you have to distance your self from such people other wise it will have a detrimental effect on you if you dont . Even if she is the only person you think you have as a friend in the world you will be better off lonely than tortured, criticised ,put down , ridiculed by that hateful women . know your mum is a ***** and move on.that is the best course for men who have been berated by nasty women

That is really tough. I think you should start out by pointing out every time she is mean or rude to you. That way she is at least aware you don't like the way she treats you. If this continues (and it sounds like it might) I would confront her with the bigger picture and tell her it is pretty much constant and you want her to stop. Then you can mention specific examples "remember when you did... called me... insulted me", and she will have to acknowledge the way she is.

i am really sorry to hear that but i do think you need to talk to your mother & tell her how you feel..maybe she doesn't know what she is doing or maybe she needs help..you may hate her like hell but she is still your mother..if you can't stand being with her, try to just leave & settle somewhere else, that is if you are already old enough & responsible enough to live alone..she could possibly realize her mistakes if she is left alone..

Don't worry about trying to change someone else. Sever ties with her, your emotional health is more important.
