never had nor saw a need for a dishwasher.......
but the question raises some odd questions...a device that is designed to clean objects...yet cannot even clean itself??? Yikes... I guess for sure I will never ever have one now! I use 75% less water and save much more time doing the dishes myself than loading them in a dishwasher and wasting the time doing that then wasting more water ......anyways...THROW it out and do them yourself!

I saw something on TV recently that you buy to clean the dishwasher. I think you run it through a few cycles. Go to the grocery store and loook.

Run a cycle with half bottle of white vinegar. If thats not enough, run another cycle with anther half bottle of vinegar. (warning: makes house smell bad). Do this once a month to keep the dishwasher clean!

Simply run it empty with borax or baking soda or a combination of the two. Works wonders!
