Cot death or Crib death is a simple term for Sudden Infant Death Syndrome(SIDS)
Cause : sudden cessation of breathing and thought to be caused by a defect in the central nervous system.
It affects sleeping infants under a year old, affecting about 2 out of 100 children in the US, making it a leading cause of death between the ages of 1 month and 1 year. Most SIDS deaths occur at 2–4 months of age, and about 90% occur by 6 months.
Prevention : Put the baby to sleep on its back and use a firm matress without any loose clothing that could accidentally cover the baby's face causing it to suffocate.

It is another name for SIDS of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, most common in children age 2-6 months.
There are theories on why it happens but no real evidence as to one particular cause.
SIDS is what they call it when an autopsy shows no cause of death in an infant.
It is not suffocation or neglect.

I was very interesting about this death before I have my first child, I am not English and I was living in Thailand for 29 yrs before I move to UK. I have never heard about 'cot death', I don't know how about this death in Thailand, but what I have learnt from my experience is, most English people put their baby in the separate room once the baby was born, after feeding them, after appriciate them. then leave them alone in the COT and in the separate room. my baby didn't wanted to, he screamed...he cried...so I never use the COT we bought for him, my ex-husband was so anoid because he wanted only me in his bed, not the baby...but I spoiled my baby not my ex-husband!...so this is probably help my baby survived from cot dead!...lol

I agree with everyone else...your dr or pediatrician should give you guidelines on how to avoid the situation like always placing the baby to sleep on its back, no pillows, toys, blankets in the crib with baby while sleeping...
