Can't Buy me Love w/ Patrick Dempsey before his career stalled. remade as "love don't cost a thing" starring Nick Cannon. I don't think the remake had the lawn mower though

Can't Buy Me Love - I haven't seen that movie in years but I still remember it vividly - the girl gets wine spilled on her mom's suede suit and the geek gives her the money he was going to use to buy a telescope so she can replace the suit - but ONLY if she will "make him popular". The quintessential 80's teen movie formula.

I want to say "Can't Buy Me Love" because I know Patrick Dempsey's character mowed lawn, but I'm not sure if that's the movie you are talking about.

Can't Buy Me Love. I watch it again every time I find it on TV.
It just goes to show don't shun the geeks in high school because they can grow up to be hotties.
