Throwing In The Towel

The phrase originated many, many years ago during boxing matches. When the corner men of a boxer thought their man was getting beaten to bad, they would throw a towel into the middle of the ring, which signified to the referee that they wanted the match stopped. It has since taken on the meaning of just giving up. No mas. I can't take anymore.

RE:
What does throwing in the towel mean?

It means to give up, quit, stop trying, say to hell with it.
Why the expression "throw in the towel"? It seems to be obvious, although I've never seen it stated, that it refers to the towel that you wipe the sweat from all your hard work, like a boxer with a sweat towel dropping it after a match. "It's over, I won't need this any more.

Giving up.

The origin is from boxing, where the fighter's manager would throw a towel into the ring to signify that he concedes.

It means quitting or surrendering to the fate. Sometimes, despite the efforts, end of the road could be bleak. Thats fate here.

Its either the opponent is strong or the fate, which makes one to throw the towel. QUIT or DEFEAT is what it means!!!

It's when you've decided enough is enough and are admitting defeat; or are feeling that there's no point in going any further with a particular activity.
