I live in a city in the USA where there are a lot of immigrant families. Many of these families, especially the asians, really push their children hard to get into the best schools and get degrees in medicine and engineering. I admire these parents because of the concern they have for their children, but I am concerned that a lot of kids are being pushed too hard to do things that they dont want to do.
In the USA if you are an MD or a professional engineer you would almost certainly get an excellent job with prestige and high pay. It would mean security for your family. I think that is why the parents do it. Many of these parents have seen areas in other parts of the world where life is NOT secure, and where educational opportunities are not available. They think about the millions of children who do NOT have free education and the chance to go to college, so they push the kids to do the maximum they can. In the USA where we are rich and even people with poor skills can get good jobs, some people think it is more important to have fun at work than to have security. But a lot of people who have seen how the world works outside the USA have a different attitude. It is worth enduring some things you arent fond of, in order to have a safe life for yourself and your family. Howeverm, some of the kids are very stressed out by the pressure from their families. It would be good to see more of a middle ground between the parents and the kids.

I agree with Bermie! Choose something that you want to do. It's funny, but a lot of people enter college with the thoughts that they want to do a certain degree program, but by the time they finish getting their general education classes they have changed their mind at least once. Choose what you want to do, not what your family wants you to do. You'll be happier in the long run. I went into college wanting to do nursing, then changed my mind to Forensics, and now I'm getting ready to graduate with my B.S. in Pre-Law and an A.S. in Criminal Justice. I just found it more interesting and there's a great variety of jobs available out there in this field. Good luck!

I think someone should do what they feel they want to do. You are going to have this job the rest of your life. I think though that parents care to much and want us to be the best we can be! Being a doctor lawyer or engineer would set us up for life and parents want us to always be ok. If its what you want to do, do it.
