Mosses are photosynthetic. They make their own food from water and CO2 just like flowering plants. Fungi are saprophytic, meaning then cannot make their own food, but absorb all their nutrients from other sources, either the soil or the dead tissues of other organisms.

Mosses are primitive plants that are non-vascular. This means that they remain short and close to the ground in order to absorb water, because they have no tissues for transporting water over long distances. All plants have cell walls made of cellulose, and they photosynthesize.
Fungi are actually a very diverse group of organisms. They include mushrooms, molds, mildew, and even yeast. They are grouped together based on a cell structure that includes a wall made of chitin and the fact that they cannot photosynthesize.
Both mosses and fungi are sometimes confused with lichens. Lichens are actually 2 separate organisms living together in a relationship called symbiosis (specifically, mutualism). A lichen is composed of fungus and algae or bacteria. The fungus provides a way to stick to surfaces, and the algae or bacteria photosynthesize to provide food.

o.k..... moss is the pretty, grey, wispy, stuff you see hanging from oak trees, in the South. Fungus are the roundish, mushroom-looking things, that grow out of the bark on trees , also, they can grow on any wood that's rotten.(actually they are living off the tree) They have spores. You do not want to breathe the spores.
