"Insane" is not psychological term. It is a term the legal systems uses. I think what you are discussing here is a "schiz", or break from reality. Talking to yourself is not the same as thinking you are talking to Abe Lincoln, or that you must wear a tinfoil hat to keep the CIA from reading your mind.
Another tip: If you question your "sanity", your not "insane".

Talking to yourself is certainly not a sign of insanity. I mean, it is entertaining for the rest of us watching you do it, but you don't come off crazy.
Insanity is when you no longer are able to make rational choices. If you are standing on top of the building and think 'what's it like to jump' and actual follow through with the though and jump, that's a bit insane. Whereas must of us will still think 'what's it like to jump' but never actually do it.

Talking to yourself isn't a sure sign of insanity. Young children do it all the time. Sometimes we need to think out loud to process something difficult.
It's when we lose contact with reality, having hallucinations, hallucinations and delusions (irrational, self-preserving beliefs), and/or disorganized behaviors and speech that a person can be classified as insane (schizophrenic).

I think it would be when you loose touch with reality (psychosis). I don't even think insane people know to ask if they are or aren't insane. They just carry on and think nothing of their imaginary world. I think in extreme cases they become harmful to themselves and others without knowing. Talking to yourself is normal as long as you know you are only with yourself so relax.

I was labeled as insane once. really. Insane is the thinking of something as being totaly normal when it is completely nuts. Such as thinking, I am going to kill my whole family to put them out of their misery so they don't have to suffer anymore because I am hurting them to much. You see the killing of them would not be the insane part, the insane part is thinking it is a good and sane idea to kill them.

It is a fine line. Some people think or question their sanity because they have so much sense they can't handle it. But they are just very intelligent, so they have the sense to analyze everything.
