I keep hearing people say they are "progressive" but what does that really mean? What are your political standpoints? What is your platform? What do you want to see happening in the world? And I don't want the answer that you're "liberal" or "democrat" again, that means NOTHING. What do you stand for?

Take a look at this question http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Ai6BHCbGoYCcM1pKsoj0hB7zy6IX?qid=20060924063158AAMmZ6S

That's what prompted my question. I hear the term used so often in political discussions, but no one who terms themselves "Progressive" ever defines what they WANT, what their GOAL is. Labels are just that, LABELS.. without saying what your real objective is, they mean nothing.

Progressive means "favoring change, progress, improvement or reform." It is inconsistent with the maintenance of the status quo, and it generally a liberal-tending political agenda. Progressive agendas will change as time passes. Progressives of the early 1900s would generally favor stronger child labor laws (forbidding the exploitation of children as laborers). Progressives of the 1910s would tend to favor women's suffrage. Progressives of the 1930s would favor changes in the economy, and greater government involvement in addressing poverty and unemployment: thus the New Deal. True progressives of the 1950s would support civil rights. Progressives today are child advocates, environmentalists, and human rights advocates. To support change and "progress" means that you have to first believe that something extant is undesirable. Thus progressives today will believe in global warming as fact and petition governments to address the issue.

PROGRESSIVE:
Promoting or favoring progress toward better conditions or new policies, ideas, or methods: a progressive politician; progressive business leadership.

Progressives, modern "liberals", socialist, would be communist. Are really all the same. The fundemental basis of their philolosphy is that the average person is the majority and they are all the same. The same needs, desires and these needs and desires are easily known and provided for by a central authority. To whom they all must serve. In short the purpose of the individual is to serve the state. And all individuals are property of the state.

That fact that what they are proposing is slavery, with "public ownership" of individuals has to be concealed by clever packaging. After all this system is for their own good, if the bitter medicine is easier to swallow with suger maybe a new name will help. Hence the constant renaming of the product. Communism, becomes socialism, becomes liberal then social justice and back to an old term progressive.

Why don't they just tell us what they really mean.

"Those who want slavery should have the grace to name it by its proper name. They must face the full meaning of that which they are advocating or condoning; the full, exact, specific meaning of collectivism, of it's logical implications, of the principles upon which it is based, and of the ultimate consequences to which these principles will lead." Ayn Rand

When I hear people say they are progressive, I believe they are trying to tell me that they are open minded, that they are willing to see more options then what is considered traditional. I do not know that a progressive person has a political standpoint that is strictly conservative or liberal. I think it's one of being able to see all viewpoints and making an informed decision based on the information.

However, that's what I think of someone who says they are progressive, they might actually mean that they are liberal.

It's one of those labels that means different things to different people. For some it is a catch-phrase that means you support a leftist agenda - especially government involvement in the economy.
