Her greatest treasure is your friendship. The loss is so great and she is only in the beginning of her grieving process which will last probably forever. I have dealt with this process with many people through the years and everyone goes through the process so differently. Some immediately want things they can see, feel and touch while others distance themselves as a coping mechanism. You know her. Think and watch her first to see which direction she is headed. If she wants his things around her and close I would go to a Christian Bookstore. Make it personal for a grandmother. A grandmother ring with his birthstone, a necklace with her name and his engraved, if she wears jewelry. If not a poetry book with an inscription on it from His name to the grandmother I love. A fun picture frame with a matting of a boy with his picture and a small inscription plate at the bottom his name and grandma's boy. You can even have a pair of his shoes copper plated like they did in the old days. If she is in coping mode have it wrapped with a note...when you are ready! She can put it up until she is at that point. You don't necessarily need to focus the gift with her loss but a gift of living that she did a wonderful job and is in herself a wonderful person. Give her something personal for herself as a special grandmother in this child's behalf. This is not the end but a beginning for him. Give her the encouragement in what you as her friend feels appropriate. You know what she can cope with right now. It has to be overwhelming. I am very sorry!

My 2 favorite gifts when I was in her shoes was a picture of Jesus and the Children ("suffer the children to come to me") and a small statue of a small child leaning on a hand (that I believe is the hand of God). Both of these have brought a "peace that passes understanding".

What about getting a picture of him engraved on a locket or something? A few years ago my boyfriend lost his nephew in a housefire at the age of two, and his sister was devastated. We got her a gold locket with his picture on (kind of hologram/engraving style) She still treasures it years later.

I agree, go with the tree and the shrub, and plant it for them, or have someone plant it for them, you don't want them to feel any other sadness if the tree or scrub was to wilt for any reason.

How about a shrub or tree that you can plant together in his memory? Then you can both watch it grow and think of him
