Does it require a lawer or one can contest the case without professional help. Are there any NGOs which help consumers file and contest cases against erring companies.

The manufacturer would be liable, yes.

But I've worked in a soft drink manufacturing plant for many many years. It's virtually impossible for anything to get inside a can or bottle during the filling process except the soft drink. The time frame for something like that to happen in the assembly process is so minute or millisecond that it just doesn't happen.'

Also, unfortunately, when you take a big corporation to court, you're almost guaranteed to lose the battle.

I will tell you anew thing Currently there has come a new way of political fund raising. They generally target a multi billion company. A report is generated with the help of a government agency that contamination was found in their product. Media gives wide publicity.I do not know how much bribe is paid to the media barons. When the demanded fund flows in all noise subsides and the product Carry's on happily. The recent cola controversy is the umpteenth in the same line.
Another fraud which people might not have noticed is the petrol dealers strikes.Periodically a whole lot of kerosene and water accumulates at the bottom of storage tanks. These have to be cleared for further adulteration. The dealers call meeting and announce as trike with immediate effect. The pumps are kept open for another 24 hrs during which period all idiots go to fill up their tank full. This way the storage tank gets cleaned of all the muck. next day the strike is withdrawn.

Then all those guys will do that only. It is extremely difficult to prove eventhough such things can happen.
