Two things can do this. 1. The seal around the door is broken, and/or worn out. 2. The hinge pin and bushings are worn so bad that it lets the door drop down enough for the seal to no longer make a seal. You can adjust the door to make it Close tighter, and maybe kick it in some at the top, and re tighten the hinge bolts. Adjust the striker bolt in just a little will make it close tighter. Loosen the hinge mounting bolts just enough to move the door. The door should move out at the bottom and in at the top. This will force it to shut tighter on the seal around the top where the water runs in. Use a garden hose to spray water around the top of the door to find the leak. One person outside, and one inside looking, and you should find the leak in no time. Sometimes you might have to get some contact cement made for molding and reseal the rubber to the body, or to the door. If all else fails, buy some new seals and replace them. Good Luck!

These cars were great running and a magnet for rust (I've owned three Cavaliers and they were all great cars). You might want to check where the first answerer suggested and even inside the trunk for missing body sealer. You may want to dry out the car and take to a car wash and carefully spray the suspect areas. Hope this helps, water leaks are some of the most frustrating repairs you can make.

Well water runs down hill, so start at the top.... Window seals, trunk seals, tail lights. There should be some drain plugs to let the water out. Otherwise, the pans are going to rust out. Check the wheel wells also.
