I am a very creative person..not in being dishonest, but in my paintings and writings etc..Due to a very tragic and traumatic year, I had not been able to write or paint..Now tho, I have finally picked up my brushes..my question is..If someone like me has been repressed and depressed for a whole year and used to painting bright vibrant color which is a true representation of that person previously, and my colors I am choosing now have seemed to change..what does that mean..??..(I previously never painted in the colors I am choosing but the subjects still remain positive)...and does certain colors suggest you are no longer positive and what would they be?....sorry, long winded but it concerns me as I am so honest and positive normally..I have survived breast cancer long ago, wrote positive songs about it, so understand the power of creativity to make a difference..I just hope I have not lost some of that along the way...please be honest and tell me your thoughts, much appreciated..thankx

Colors are associated with how your feeling as well as your perspective or outlook on life!! If prior to this time frame the colors were vibrant and full of life so to speak it was to express the out look and feelings you had at that time. If the colors you are using now are not as vibrant and full of life it could be caused by again How you are feeling as well as your perspective or outlook on life. While your paintings may still have a positive expression the colors could be the reality of things. Which still can be just as effective and meaningful to you as the painter or someone admiring your work.
However, don’t give up your painting or writing you have gone through some things that while you still may be positive you just understand the reality of life and how it can be life changing and alter who you once were.

You have changed too, going through your ordeal with breast cancer . If we always stayed the same life could be quite boring. You are no longer the same person, I sense you have much more depth to you than before - and sorry I don't know you that well. It doesn't mean you have lost your honesty and you still sound positive. Just because you use colors that are less bright doesn't mean you are a lesser person. Perhaps what you are conveying in your creativity has more depth and will reach more people or different people in the meaning that is now behind your art.
What have you learnt out of your experience of the last 12 months. Do you think you are the same person you were. You have not lost the person you were, you have grown bigger. I like the way you say you WERE repressed and depressed - coming out of that is major. Move forward and be proud of yourself. You can make a bigger difference having had the experience.

In life you go through changes, your creativity also changes to reflect the life changes. If you liked your brighter colors, but now are choosing darker, I think is a reflection of how you are feeling right now, you said this is the first time in a year you picked up your brushes but you have taken a step forward and started the work you love just with a little different view. Just keep painting- do what is in your heart and let the colors and strokes flow, you will learn from that also, and when all is healed or you come to accept what has had you down the bright colors will appear once again!

You are working out your feelings on canvas. This is a good thing it is your release. Just keep painting what you feel and in time you will fined that other colors will start to work there way back into your work. Your feeling right know is normal for artist We often express our feelings in our work. This is the only release we have. You should do the same thing with your wrighting.

after a long time of no creation. It can be hard to express yourself. But think about it, after something like that, you arent the same person you used to be. Your colors and subjects still express you. They are simply expressing a different side of you. One that you arent used to. I wouldnt worry about it. It isnt that you have lost your creativity. It has simply been placed into a deeper part of you that is going to take time to reach once more.
I dont think it possible for someone to lose creativity and personal expression. I simply think that when tramatizing experiances come, they force them farther into the human mind so it has room to cope. It is recoverable, just not that easily, but dont fret. It isnt gone. Im sure if you reach deeper into a more positive perspective, it will come back to you.

It sounds like you are using your art to work through the trauma of the past year.
For what its worth, I think this is a good thing and is an honest way to deal with what has happened.

You can expect your creative expression to vary at differnt times in your life, just go with it, look at all the 'phases' people like picasso went through for example, all reflected different states of mind, situations and surroundings, all can still be valid creative works though

Just paint what you feel like painting right now and don't worry about what you used to do. Artists change their styles all the time.

colors represent the subconsious(sorry for the spelling). Art is a representation of true feelings, perhaps your personality has changed, because of things you have had to deal with, that is normal

Creative people do what they do without worrying about it as long as the inspiration and the drive is there. They don't worry about whether what they're doing is "positive" or not. What's important to them is that they're creating.
