The 4 string Tenor has two main tunings in 5ths.

1) As the viola (CGDA)
2) An octave below the violin (GDAE). Most Irish banjos are tuned this way.

Jazz banjos are often G banjos (also called Plectrum Banjo) and tuned like a 5-string but without the 5th string (high drone).

the norm would be CGBD based on a standard 24 fret ok.
