Ive been told there is a type of transparent sheet of a thick plastic which can be cut-to-shape and stuck on the bonet, bumber etc. of the car.
This is used to protect the paintwork from stone chippings and scratches.
Does anyone know what this is called?
Supposedly very popular for use on luxury cars like ferraris.....

3M makes a product called EXPEL and PRO-TECT. Call around. It is not the most perfect paint protection system. Kinda looks like Orange Peal rough paint work. And you will find prices about 300 dollars. Friends of mine have driven 100 miles to get it installed on Corvettes Porsches. Mostly to find a good installer to do a smooth job. But if I had a Aston Martin or new Bently 300 would not seem like so much. I went with the Colgan Removable Bra and wing mirror covers in black vinyl. On my 2006 Holden Manaro, Pontiac GTO it is called in the USA.

Thick plastic on a Ferrari - not a chance. Just wash and polish like everyone else. A good polish and buff with an electric polisher and you only have to wash occasionally. It depends on the colour of the car though - white is bad. Mine is a metallic ice blue and keep clean. The polish is great - it even gets a wash when it rains.

I have used this type of thing on cars and aircraft. It is generally polyurethane tape, which is adhesive backed and cut into shapes to suit the particular area you need to protect. It is expensive and you must prepare the surface properly before applying it otherwise the corners will lift off. Also, I would recommend you only use on those areas that really need protection because you can see that it there and it will discolour slightly with age and exposure to sun light.

it's just a stick on tape, i've got that on my truck around the wheel wells, it came from the factory with it, i don't like it, it did protect the paint, but it looks trashy, all the little cuts in it from gravel have turned black with road grime and mildew, and it stands out like a sore thumb, and i havent found anything that will clean it out, and i cant even get the crap off there.
