Some folks think nothing about hurling insults. "It's good for them. Teaches them how harsh life is."

Lobster Pot Theory
When you are trying to be "different" or trying to improve yourself and in doing so, climb out of the lobster pot, those around you think that you think you are better than they are. Therefore, they try to "pull you back in the pot" by being critical, by insulting you, or poking fun at you.

Either they are just plain mean, or they think more of themselves at the time by bringing others down. But only for a short while then they need another "fix" it really is like a drug.

I taught my kids that it was the scale method - if you pour criticisim and insults upon someone they appear to go down in value and you appear to go up in value.
The reality it is the cream method - when you do good and do the right thing consistantly good rises
