Jihad doesn't literally mean holy war. In Arabic it means 'to struggle' and in an Islamic sense it means 'to strive for excellence in the name of God'. So it is true.. we do jihad everyday! When we fight our temptations, that's a form of jihad. Studying for our finals is also jihad. You get what I mean? :)

But if you are specifically talking about war here, in the Quran it is mentioned:
"Permission (to fight) is given to those believers whom war is made, because they (the righteous) have been wronged." 22.39 Surah Al-Hajj <-- self defence

There are rules for declaring jihad ( as in holy war), some are:
1) An individual or an organization cannot declare jihad.
2) Jihad cannot be declared on a nation that allows Muslims to freely practice their religion.
3) When in war, Muslims are not allowed to destroy churches, monastries, temples.
4) During war, Muslims cannot destroy the source of food (plantations, crops) or pollute the source of water of their enemies.

Overall, the common goal amongst the muslims is to eliminate western culture.
Yesterday, on the michael Medved radio show, a caller, I believe she said she was from washington state, sid she has heard peaceful muslims, speak of taking over the US government. She said they talked about increasing the muslim population, by immigration, and by populating through childbirth, until they have enough Muslims here to start taking government offices. Ultimately one day, there will be enough in government to institute Sharia Law. They said it may take 20 to 50 years or more, but they will do it and not give up until it is done.
I have read on here, Y.A. that that is what the Mexicans are planning to do also.
I think this says alot to those of us who want tighter immigration and border security. US government, WAKE UP !!!!!

Ideally yes, but it must be voluntary.

Jihad is regarded as the best thing, one can offer voluntarily. It is superior to non obligatory prayers, fasting, Zakat, Umra and Hajj as mentioned in the Qur'an and the Ahadith of the Prophet(pbuh). The benefits of Jihad are of great extent and large in scope, while its effects are far-reaching and wide-spreading as regards Islam and the Muslims. For an individualMuslim, Jihad includes all acts of worship and all aspects of belief- thus bringing him greatest reward and vast blessings; and for the Muslim nation, Jihad provides all kinds of successes in respect of prosperity and dignity, victory and glory-thus bringing magnificence and splendour.

yes but its not what most people in the west understand it to mean it is the struggle in life to live by Gods will the other meaning is they can kill in defence if the west stopped interfering as they have done for decades i don't think any of this would have ever started and the US government are fanning the flames to suit their own agenda

That does not mean harming or killing others. There are very strict rules in the Koran that address this.
