There are so many factors that can change the answer to this - it can be days, weeks, months, etc. depending on where the sprain is, the severity of the sprain, your overall physical condition, how you try to recover (resting, moving), etc. I assume that you have already seen a doctor. If you haven't, you should to rule out any true tissue damage (disk herniations, bulges, etc.) and to get non-narcotic medication to help you heal. Back strains are one of the few injuries where treating the symptoms really does help to heal you. Naproxen (I believe it's in Advil or Alleve) should help, too. Good luck - I know it hurts, but I hope you're feeling better soon.
