Yup there is a definite difference in the number of pins, DDR has more. The bigger difference is in the tab configuration. DDR only has one tab placed just off the center of the chipset, where SD Ram also known as EDO ram has one about the center, and another approximately one inch from one end, making it so that you can not put them in wrong.

SDRAM stands for Synchronous Dynamic Random Access Memory.
DDR is short for "DDR SDRAM" and stands for Double Data Rate.

Therefore, the main difference between SDR and DDR memory the doubled speed: DDR can transfer data at roughly twice the speed of SDRAM. For example, PC133 SDRAM runs at 133 Mhz, while 133 Mhz DDR effectively runs at 133 Mhz x 2 = 266 Mhz.

SDRAM has 168 pins and two notches at the connector, which prevents it from being used in a DDR SDRAM motherboard and vice versa. It comes mainly in PC66, PC100 and PC133; the bus speeds of the RAM in MHz.

DDR SDRAM has 184 pins and a single notch at the connector. It comes in speeds of PC1600 (166 MHz), PC1800 (200 MHz), PC2100 (266 MHz), PC2700 (333 MHz), PC3200 (400 MHz), and PC4400 (550 Mhz). The numbers represent the theoretical maximum bandwidth of the DDR SDRAM in Megabytes per second (MB/s). For example, PC2100 has a theoretical maximum bandwidth of 2100 MB/s.

in case you purchased the 240 pin and your operating ddr sd ram take it back grab a pc2700 or pc3200 184 pin 400mhz (pc3200) or 333mhz (pc2700) what ever your structures bus % is that if it doesnt fit dont jam it in there or youll be procuring a clean motherboard meaning you've gotten to get all new parts for it too because the former stuff ought to probable be incompatible and oh yeah you may ought to purchase the OS agian so dont shrink to rubble your memory banks please

hello! ken..

i tried to tell them in some points...

1> SDRAM means synchronous dynamic random access memory which is a type of solid state computer memory.
where as...
DDR SDRAM or double-data-rate synchronous dynamic random access memory is a type of memory integrated circuit used in computers.

2.>Therefore, the main difference between SDR and DDR memory the doubled speed: DDR can transfer data at roughly twice the speed of SDRAM. For example, PC133 SDRAM runs at 133 Mhz, while 133 Mhz DDR effectively runs at 133 Mhz x 2 = 266 Mhz.

DDR SDRAM has 184 pins and a single notch at the connector.

4>SD RAM,It comes mainly in PC66, PC100 and PC133; the bus speeds of the RAM in MHz.

DDR RAM ,It comes in speeds of PC1600 (166 MHz), PC1800 (200 MHz), PC2100 (266 MHz), PC2700 (333 MHz), PC3200 (400 MHz), and PC4400 (550 Mhz). 5> DDR ram has a bunch of pins where they connect into the port on your motherboard, the pins look like this
||||||||||||||-||||||||||||||
they have an equal distance from the notch to either end.
SD Ram looks like this
||||||||||-||||-|||||||||||||
Usually with two notches, one close to the center and one further to the side.

6>As u already knowSD RAM stands for Single Data Random Access Memory. It has a different ~paging system~, for those of you who dont know what paging is, it is the swaping of files from your hard drive to your RAM Module. DDR stands for Double Data RAM, its paging system swaps 2 pieces of data at a time

7>DDR Ram is only supported by P4 processor while its not same in case of SD RAM

SD RAM: Syncronous Dynamic RAM they work at the same speed of the BUS
DDR RAM: Double Data Rate RAM they double the speed by giving double reading for each BUS clock
