Typically a woman's cycle lasts 28 days. Within that time there are a few things happening. The fist day of bleeding is the start of the cycle. That is when the ovaries start to prepare an ovum (egg) for release. It takes about 11 to 13 days for that egg to mature before it is released. Some women notice a small amount of cramping when they actually ovulate (release the egg) This is known as mittleshmertz.
The reason for the overlap in time is that you have to consider that a man's sperm can live for up to 48 hours. So even if you have not ovulated the sperm can basically wait a couple of days until you do.
Often women using the rhythmic method of birth control will avoid intercourse for about 7-10 days of their cycle. Usually the end of the second week and the beginning of the third. However it should be noted that the rhythm method his a high failure rate. This is because sometimes each ovary is acting separately and in some months both ovaries will produce an egg. Although that is not the typical scenario it does happen frequently enough to make it advisable to seek other forms of birth control.

If you have a regular 4day period, you have 5 days or six if you choose to push it. However, don't count your safe period from "after my period" as your period may alter. Counting the day your menstruation commenced as day 1, you can safely have sex up to the 9th day. The 10th day is not so safe, the 11th day is a dangerous gamble, the 12 day should see you expecting a baby. Reason is cause you should ovulate on the 13th or 14th day. On the average the male sperm is capable of surviving inside you for 2 days at least. so if you have sex on the 11th day and ovulate on the 13th, you are likely to get pregnant. For more details, please contact your doctor.

It varies from person to person.
In order for that to even be a semi-accurate method of birth control (and I say SEMI-accurate because your timing could still be off and you could still get pregnant) you would have to be charting your cycles and basal body temperature and all sorts of things.
I'd suggest just going on the pill or using condoms.. it's more effective and less work for you!
