Well the way I see it, the United States flushes away billions of dollars each year by extending loans to countries whom we know will never be able to pay us back. At least the money is going to our fellow Americans and trust me, their families are a far cry from becoming millionaires. If the government were to award a family a million dollars it is really not a big deal. For example the average salary of a NY police officer and firefighter is somewhere in the proximity of $40-50K per year. At 40K it would take a person 25 years to make a million dollars. At 50K it would take 20. I am sure the recipients of any government funding would much rather have their loved ones back then the money. I don't think you will see any of them in Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous anytime soon. We live in the United States. Which means united we stand and divided we fall. What if you had lost a loved one in 911 and the government offered you money? What would you do? Would you take it or would you tell them that's okay keep it? It is always important that we show love and compassion for our fellow man. In order to do this we sometimes have to think of ourselves being in their situation. While you are focusing on money, they are dealing with the loss and death of their spouse, parent or child. Peace and God bless.

the u s is the richest country in the world and unlike other countries the u s felt it obligated to some type of award for the deaths of the many who were fathers mothers brothers sisters and other relations. i had hoped the u s would have done the same for the victims of katrina but i have many hidden complaints about that which i will give my opinion on when i see a question pertaining to that storm. i think the u s did set a bad example by giving money to many that had life insurance policiesmost in the gulf states had no type of insurance at all including flood damage.

It was mainly the investment companies and private donations that took care of the families. Most of us gave heavy and it went to the families. I would gladly do it again.
