because what we do not know, scares us. mediocrity brings comfort compared to greatness. great people scare the common men. we do not want change. we want stability. stagnancy. we want something constant. great individuals, change the course of history. many people do not want that. thus we hide behind the masks of indifference and mediocrity.

why are most leaves of near-average length?
or did you mean: why does mediocrity do better in this world than superior people? - to get great money/power, you have to be stupid enough to want it - smart people want a fairshare of money and power and then a lot of other much more interesting things, like happiness, fulfillment, love, wisdom, laughter, friends, delight, joy, and so on
because smart people are not smart enough to know how vital to happiness and survival it is to prevent people getting unlimited money and power, they sometimes get kicked in the head by more powerful people - like hitler and the jews - or hard gogetters and more honest people - or the mafia and 'ordinary' people - or corporations and 'the little guy' - the smart people find hideouts like oxford, and foolishly let the powergrabbers go wild
the founding fathers of america knew the democracy couldnt survive wealth concentration - why didnt the people know this?

quality is always found in premium...
humans are yet to discover and explore their true worth and look beyond superficial existence...
the society lives by defined parameters and conditioning enforced by religion, education system and to a great extent by science...
mediocrity thrives bcoz humans tend to be complacent...
mediocrity thrives bcoz the society has failed to define "Quality"...

Because most people don't have the motivation to be great. Most people make it their goal to be normal. Most people make it their goal to get by. Most people only care if they can get by with the bare minimum. That is what separates the great men from the average man.
