It's called 'fencing' in modern times. It is, I beleive and Olympic sport. I'm sure you'd be able to find somewhere not too far away to observe it...

Well there are those historical groups and they have proper battles with real weapons and they sword fight and things like that. One of them got really badly injured a while back... Also if you like stuff like that then maybe you should try fencing?
You must be able to learn from somewhere because people in movies are taught how to sword fight so there must be someone who teaches.

Yeah, they still do. The coolest groups like this are the die hard dungeons & dragons nerds who like to LARP (live action role play) the battles in their games. *ahem* I um... yeah... used to be one of them, but because I am weak of frame and slight of muscle I played the elf mage unless it was a weapon I could actually carry for more than 5 minutes.

Medieval societies do this as well, but they take it a bit more seriously... kinda. I guess it'd depend on the group, really.

Both are hard to find, so good luck with that. A third option could be an acting class, say for medieval theatre (shakespeare stuff). They focus on the how to of fighting without using the deadly weapons.

When you go to sword fight with say, a traditionally made broadsword, you'll realise how freakin heavy it is weeeellll before you realise how dangerous it is if you lose control. Jousting is just... insane, given the amount of strength it requires while riding a horse at full speed. Armour is also really heavy, most people who are serious about these interests have theirs custom made, which costs a fortune but is better for the spine in the long run. Usually there'll be one guy in the group who makes the armour himself... usuing traditional techniques. Absolutely insane. Makes you realise how hard blacksmiths had it back in the day.

It is illegal to kill people, even with swords. So most of these groups have very strict health & safety regulations and medical staff on hand (sometimes referred to as Clerics). Training with a wooden sword is usually required before you're allowed to use a real one. Weapon storage would vary depending on laws in your state.

But yeah, they exist alright. Its just that in movies, they don't really take into consideration how much muscle is required for such combat, probably the biggest difference by far... definitely the main reason why a lot of people give up on it after a while.

Yes. Just yesterday I turned on the tv and I saw Kermit the Frog swordfighting.

So yeah, muppets at least still sword fight.
