Let them be x and y assume x> y
from the given condition x+y = -27
xy = 34
take square of 1st and subratct 4 times 2nd
(x-y)^2 = 729-136 = 593
from this x-y = sqrt(593)
then they can be solved for x and y

Hi. I hope your not beating your head about this one (thats what I tend to do!) I do believe that #34 is a prime number, meaning that is only divisable by one and itself. I just learned that because I'm cramming for the COMPASS test so I won't have to take HIghschool math again at age 42! I hope that helps! Love, Cindy

xy = 34
x + y = -27
x + y = -27
y = -x - 27
(-x - 27)x = 34
-x^2 - 27x = 34
x^2 + 27x + 34 = 0
x = (-b ± sqrt(b^2 - 4ac))/(2a)
x = (-27 ± sqrt(27^2 - 4(1)(34)))/(2(1))
x = (-27 ± sqrt(729 - 136))/2
x = (-27 ± sqrt(593))/2
x = (1/2)(-27 ± sqrt(593))
y = -x - 27
y = -((1/2)(-27 ± sqrt(593))) - 27
y = (27/2) ± (1/2)sqrt(593) - 27
y = (27/2) - (54/2) ± (1/2)sqrt(593)
y = ((27 - 54)/2) ± (1/2)sqrt(593)
y= (-27/2) ± (1/2)sqrt(593)
y = (1/2)(-27 ± sqrt(593))
ANS:
x = (1/2)(-27 - sqrt(539))
y = (1/2)(-27 + sqrt(593))

let the numbers be X and y. We then have
xy=34....1
x+y=-27....2
from 2 we have
y=-27-x substituting this in 1 we have
x(-27-x)=34
x^2+27x+34=0
x=[-27+_sqrt(729-128)]/2
=[-27+-24.51]/2
=-2.49/2 or-51.51/2
=-1,245 or-25.755
y=28.245 or52.755
x=-1.245 and y=28.245

x+y = -27 and xy = 34.
(x-y)^2 = (x+y)^2 - 4xy = (-27)^2 - 4*34 = (593).
x-y = +-(593)^1/2.
2x = -27+-(593)^1/2 and so on.Hope this is right ;-).

Since they multiply to a positve, they must both be negative.
So
