The 350 is the best, not to mention all the different things you can do with a 350 block. As far as poor engines go, hard to say. I don't like the 265 straight 6 personally, nor do I like the newer 2.8, its gutless. The 327 was (and still is) a popular engine, so its a good one. The 305 was pretty much a waste of block material. Boat anchors at best. The Camaro 302 was an awesome engine, but you don't see many of them left around. The 454 is a great big block, but I prefer the 396 or the 402. I guess that was more than you asked for huh??

I would have to say you are rihght on what you guessed. The 2.8 is a piece, but the 350 will live forever, its just that good. as to any others, I have heard the 3.4 liter is somewhat bad, now the 3.8 liter is a hoss, great engine also. Another really good one is the 4.3 liter vortec, but cosidering its the exact same make-up as the 350 with two less cylinders go figure huh. The old quad four 2.5 was good also, I owned one in a '91 grand am lasted till 195,000, tensioner for timing chain kept breaking couldn't figure out what was busting it, and after three times of fixing it I just junked it. My cousin also had a 2.5 in a five speed he drained all oil and ran alcohol through it twice and tried to blow it up, couldn't do it, he is the kind of person that if something can be broken on any vehicle he can do it, so if that tells you how good that motor was.

The small block Chevy V-8 in all it's displacements is an excellent engine having been around since 1955. However my vote for the best engine Chevrolet ever made goes to the inline 6's. They took an extraordinary amount of abuse and were damn near unstoppable. They would run for miles even after the water was gone from the radiator. They'd run on two cylinders all day. Didn't matter if the crankcase was full of oil or it only had a quart and a half, that little 6 banger would just keep on going and going and...well...you get the idea. My vote for the worst engine Chevy ever made goes to the 4 cylinder that came mostly in the Vega, Astre, etc. cars of the 70's.

Depends on what you consider a "Chevy" engine. Today, the engines are developed by GM powertrain and are shared across most GM brands.
That being said, the 4.2L is probably the best from an NVH standpoint, but it has limited success since it is difficult to package. It has only been available in the Trailblazer.
The LSx series of engines are more compact and are the most powerful engines that GM has ever produced.
However the Gen I small block (283, 327, 350, 400, etc.) was the most popular. It was produced from 1955 until the late 1990s.
As far as worst engine... I'm not sure. It depends on your definition. The very early (1910s) 4 cylinders were not powerful, unreliable, and noisy.

the best has got to be the 350....it is by far the most popular engine that has ever been produced and this engine has been being produced for over 30 years...there are more 350's out there than you can shake a stick at!!!
Another great engine made by chevy is the 4.3 V6 found in the S10's/Sonomas and Blazers/Jimmy's.

The best engine would have to be the 454's that you could get in the 1970's chevellle's. The worst engine would be the 1970's Vega which had a 2.3 liter 4cylinder engine rated at only 90hp. The Vega engine's were often swapped out for larger V-6 engines giving them the advantage of a greater power-to-weight ratio.

The 283 and the 327 probably were the best and most popular. The 6.0 diesel which was a gasoline conversion was a total piece of junk! I would say the 350 holds the title for production and use though.

The best engine was the 302 Chevy put in the Camero Z28 in 1968 and 1969. Now that was a muscle car. The worse engine was the 2.2 they used in the GrandAm in the 1980s.

350's are awesome, good for either sports or a good workhorse like in my truck. I have 300,000 miles in my 96 chevy and she still purrs like new, and with the K and N air injection system she can roar. 350's are awsome old and new. But personnally The zz572cu giant is the best engine gm's ever created if you like muscle. Gm is pushing there technology towards better fuel consumption in gas engines and are creating non gas engines and fuel cells, who knows how these will perform but Gm is always trying to do its best.
