Contact the hospital about your situation. There are a lot of different programs for people in your situation. Do not delay on this, because if you go to collections on your account, it will be too late! Ask someone where you register, about programs the hospital have for fixed incomes. A lot of times, if you make under a certain amount in a year, and you fill out their forms, they will dismiss your charges.

If this hospital, or medical facility does not have any charity programs like this, then I would tell them what you can afford a month for payments. Remember paying $5 - $10 a month is better than not paying at all. I don't think medical bills acrue interest either, but don't quote me on that.

I am going through this myself, but it is my child who has cancer. I applied to Medicaid first. I don't know what state you are in, but if you go to your local Job and Family Services office, they can give you some help. Also, the hospital is a great resource. I don't know your specifics, but there are organizations that provide assistance related to certain diseases and conditions that you may qualify for. The help is out there, but it does require some searching. It is definitely worth it, trust me!
